I was mentioned here in reference to this post about the one true design flaw in laptops.
I don’t carry a laptop around. The one Orlok and I own is bulky, old, and doesn’t run by battery for more than 30 minutes. The nature of working in retail doesn’t lend itself to being able to work for very long by computer anyway, because by the time the computer powers up, half of my break is gone. I did comment, though, and listed the contents of my purse at any given time, and I’m amazed that some people can get by with just a wallet. Perhaps this is why I change purses so often. It is very challenging to find one “perfect” purse or bag to carry everything needed to function daily.
Just to go to work is a minimum of two bags, or at least a purse and a bag. I have my usual things, plus an entree for lunch, at least 3 .5 liter bottles of water, snacks, and sometimes either crocheting, or a file folder of current things I’m working on to read. I mostly spend my breaks talking to Orlok anyway, unless he’s working, too. I would never try to run an errand while on my break.
So, let me ask you: what do you carry around with you to function everyday? Just a wallet, or keys, driver’s license and a check card? A huge purse? Do you haul around a laptop? And, if so, what do you do with the cord?
So the last couple of weeks have found me in my quest for the “perfect” planner. I realize there is no such thing, but for me, it isn’t so much the being “perfect” part as the “not needing to have a separate wallet” part. Orlok has decreed that I am not to really buy anymore purses (everyone has their shopping addiction, don’t they?), nor am I to add to my currently-full plate of projects making a messenger bag. Therefore, I have found a planner that is “perfect”, or will be after I get a bigger bag. At any rate, I have slots for my cards and other important things (like pictures of Orlok and I, and of our nephew), a place for money and the checkbook, and room for custom pages, such as keeping track of my blood sugar levels.
This process saw me through approximately four different planners (including 2 I made myself), and a lot of paper. However, ask anyone who really knows me, and you’ll find out that I have to do the trial-and-error thing with creativity sometimes.
Anyway, I finished printing all of the custom pages yesterday, and decided to make a mini-pda. Just a bunch of 2×2” squares with info printed on them and some blank squares for making notes. You know, for those times when I don’t want to drag the purse along. I have one little wallet to throw in my check card, license and insurance card for that purpose.
I’ve also been configuring Google Reader and trying to cut down on the number of different pages that I read. It’s been working so far and I think I have Orlok sold on the idea for his reading.
I’ve done some tweaking around the website and added a few new things upon joining several new websites. I still have an internal list of “to-dos” for this site and for Passion Groove. I need to run out to Rice to the print shop and get more copies of ITAK to send out to Rick.
I’ve gotten a few submissions for Issue 6. There’s still about a half a month left to get stuff in, so I’m hoping I won’t have to go fishing for content. Probably will send out a reminder by the 25th.
One item I want to get done is a list of my profiles and usernames on various sites and posted on here somewhere. Not only for my benefit (I forget about some of these sites sometimes), but for other people, too, to find me on the web.
For now, back to the mini-pda and lunch before going to GW. Closing tonight.
